The Polytechnic Ibadan is one of Nigeria’s most established public polytechnics, founded on 7 August 1970 as the successor to the former Technical College, Ibadan. Located in Ibadan, Oyo State, it was created to meet the growing demand for technical and vocational education and has since become a major centre for practical, industry-relevant learning.
The institution describes itself as a “citadel of learning” and a centre for academic excellence in Applied Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Business, and Communication Studies. Its academic structure is built around six faculties and more than 40 departments, with programmes delivered through both full-time and flexible learning options. The school offers National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes, with additional professional and post-HND options in selected fields.
Poly Ibadan’s mission is closely tied to producing skilled, innovative, and globally competitive graduates who can contribute to Nigeria’s social and economic development. That mission is reflected in its emphasis on hands-on training and middle-level manpower development, which has long been central to the role of polytechnics in Nigeria’s education system. The institution also maintains a strong practical orientation through industrial work experience requirements and applied coursework across its departments.
Its programme mix is broad and technical, covering disciplines such as engineering, architecture, building technology, estate management, computer science, applied chemistry, biochemistry, statistics, accountancy, banking and finance, mass communication, and public administration. This range gives it relevance across both technical and business-oriented career paths, making it one of the more comprehensive polytechnics in the country.
The Polytechnic, Ibadan also has a long-standing reputation for discipline, skills training, and community impact. Its slogan, Ise loogun ise – meaning “work is the antidote for poverty” – captures the institution’s philosophy of practical education and hard work. Over five decades after its founding, it remains an important public institution for students seeking applied, career-focused tertiary education in Nigeria.
Higher education, diploma and higher national diploma programmes, applied science training, engineering education, environmental studies, business studies, and communication studies.
