About

NIRSAL Microfinance Bank Limited, commonly known as NMFB, is a Nigerian national microfinance bank established to provide affordable financial services and improve access to credit for individuals, farmers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. It was incorporated as a private limited company in 2019 and began operations after receiving a national microfinance-bank licence from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The bank was established through a partnership involving the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending, the Bankers’ Committee, and the Nigerian Postal Service. The partnership was designed to create a broad financial-services platform capable of reaching underserved customers and administering selected government and Central Bank of Nigeria intervention programmes.

NIRSAL Microfinance Bank has a close institutional connection with NIRSAL, an organisation established to reduce the risks associated with lending to Nigeria’s agricultural sector. However, NMFB operates as a separate licensed microfinance bank. Its role is not limited to agricultural finance; it also provides conventional banking and credit services to individuals, micro and small businesses, salary earners, farmers, and other eligible customers.

A major feature of the bank’s operations is its role as a channel for government-backed intervention funds. NMFB became a primary disbursement channel for the Agri-Business, Small and Medium Enterprise Investment Scheme, known as AGSMEIS. The scheme was established by the Bankers’ Committee to support agricultural businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises, promote employment, and encourage sustainable economic development.

The bank also participates in the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, which links smallholder farmers with anchor companies and agro-processors. The programme provides financing for farmers producing commodities that serve as raw materials for agro-allied businesses. By connecting farmers to markets and credit, the scheme is intended to strengthen agricultural value chains and improve productivity.

In addition to intervention programmes, NIRSAL Microfinance Bank offers savings accounts, current accounts, personal loans, business loans, agricultural finance, payments, transfers, and other financial services. Its ordinary banking products serve customers who may require smaller loans, flexible savings options, or easier access to formal financial services than those typically provided by larger commercial banks.

The institution has its headquarters in Abuja and has developed a nationwide branch and service network. Its broad distribution model reflects its original objective of taking formal financial services closer to customers across Nigeria, including people in rural and underserved communities. Company information has identified its Abuja office at House 1, Plot 103/104, Monrovia Street, Wuse 2, Abuja.

NIRSAL Microfinance Bank is therefore both a conventional financial institution and an important delivery platform for public financial-inclusion initiatives. Its combination of microfinance banking, agricultural lending, SME finance, and intervention-fund administration gives it a distinctive position within Nigeria’s financial system.

To provide accessible finance to Nigerian entrepreneurs and agricultural value chain participants through government intervention programmes.
