Biography

Bolaji Balogun is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Chapel Hill Denham, Nigeria’s leading independent investment banking and asset management firm. With a career spanning more than 35 years across investment banking, securities trading, and telecommunications, he has emerged as one of the country’s most influential deal-makers and institution-builders.

Mr Balogun joined the First City Group in the early 1990s, working in investment banking and securities trading. He rose to become Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of CSL Stockbrokers Limited and was appointed Executive Director of FCMB Capital Markets in January 1996. In 2001, he left the FCMB Group to co-found Econet Wireless Nigeria (now Airtel Nigeria), where he served as a director and later as Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer, and subsequently Chief Marketing Officer. He oversaw the USD 285 million GSM licence capitalisation and bid process for Econet, and was part of the team behind the company’s USD 1.67 billion sale to Celtel in 2005 – then Nigeria’s largest successfully exited private investment.

Returning to investment banking in 2005, Balogun founded Chapel Hill Denham in April 2005 and has since served as its Chief Executive Officer. Under his leadership, the firm has grown into a pre-eminent investment bank and alternative asset manager, with capabilities across investment banking, capital markets, asset management, and securities trading. Chapel Hill Denham also channels capital into priority sectors such as infrastructure, energy and renewables, real estate, SMEs, financial inclusion, healthcare, and education.

Beyond Chapel Hill Denham, Balogun holds significant board and advisory positions. In May 2024, he was appointed Independent Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Board of Unilever Nigeria Plc. He serves as Chief Investment Officer of the Nigeria Infrastructure Debt Fund (NIDF) and is associated with Trustfund Pensions, one of Nigeria’s largest pension fund managers. He is also involved with SME NG, an impact investment platform supporting women- and youth-owned SMEs.

Previously, he served as Board Chairman of Lafarge Africa Plc (2015 – 2020) and as a director of Lafarge WAPCO Nigeria Plc (2005 – 2015), and held directorships at NASD Plc and Nahco Aviance Plc. In September 2009, he was appointed to the Africa Advisory Board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. In 2024, he was appointed Chairman of Endeavor Nigeria, having previously served as Vice Chairman.

His educational background reflects a strong foundation in finance and economics. He attended Igbobi College in Lagos and Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, for his secondary education. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London (1989). He is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Nigeria, and an Authorised Dealing Clerk of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Professionally, Balogun is widely recognised for his strategic leadership, commitment to corporate governance, and focus on innovation and sustainable growth in African finance. Chapel Hill Denham has been named Best Investment Bank in Nigeria multiple times, including in 2023, under his leadership. He is also known publicly as a judge on Lions’ Den, a Nigerian business reality show that supports entrepreneurs.
