Adaora Umeoji, OON is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, one of Africa’s largest and most profitable financial institutions. Appointed to the role in June 2024, she became the first woman to lead a major Nigerian money deposit bank, marking a historic milestone in the country’s banking sector. Her appointment capped a career spanning more than 25 years within Zenith Bank, where she rose through the ranks from a graduate trainee to the top executive position.
Dr Umeoji joined Zenith Bank in 1998 and has held several senior leadership roles across the organisation. She served as Deputy Managing Director from 2016 until her elevation as GMD/CEO in 2024. Prior to that, she was Executive Director, Public Sector and Regional Zones, and held key responsibilities in retail banking, corporate banking, treasury, relationship management, and strategic business development. She also led the bank’s Marketing Group at the Maitama branch early in her career. Over the years, she played a central role in expanding Zenith Bank’s market leadership, strengthening operational efficiency, accelerating digital transformation, and deepening customer relationships.
Her educational background reflects a strong commitment to continuous learning. She holds a B.Sc. in Sociology from the University of Jos, a B.Sc. in Accounting and an LL.B. in Law from Baze University, Abuja, and an LL.M. from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom. She also has an MBA from the University of Calabar and a Doctorate in Business Administration from Apollos University, USA. She has completed executive programmes at Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, Columbia Business School, Wharton, and INSEAD.
Professionally, Dr Umeoji is a Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute (UK) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. She is also a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Management and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria. In 2022, she was honoured with the national award of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for her contributions to nation-building. She is widely recognised for her strategic leadership, commitment to corporate governance, and focus on innovation and sustainable growth in African banking.
