Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), formerly the University of Ife, is one of Nigeria’s most prestigious federal universities, located on a 2,020-hectare campus in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Established in 1961 following the Ashby Commission’s landmark report on Nigeria’s post-secondary education needs, the university opened its doors to 244 students in October 1962 across five founding faculties: agriculture, arts, economics and social studies, law, and science. It was renamed in 1987 to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region and one of the university’s founding fathers.

Today, OAU has grown into a comprehensive research university organized into 13 faculties and multiple colleges, including the College of Health Sciences, alongside specialized institutes spanning agricultural research, cultural studies, and public health. It houses the oldest Faculty of Pharmacy in Nigeria and operates its own teaching hospital, supporting both clinical training and medical research. The university’s roughly 35,000-strong student population spans about 13,000 undergraduates and 7,500 postgraduates, drawn from across Nigeria and beyond.

As a federal government-owned institution, OAU is publicly funded and governed under a Council structure, with a ceremonial Chancellor and an academically-elected Vice-Chancellor overseeing daily administration. It has weathered several administrative transitions over the decades while consistently ranking among Nigeria’s top universities, and celebrated 65 years of “transformative education, innovation and national impact” in June 2026. Its alumni network includes prominent figures across academia, public service, and industry – including vice-chancellors now leading other Nigerian universities, a marker of the institution’s outsized influence on the country’s higher education landscape.
