Akure Ondo State

About

In 1981, Nigeria’s civilian government under President Shehu Shagari established the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) as one of three specialized technology universities meant to close a specific gap: the country was flush with oil revenue but short on the engineers, scientists, and technologists needed to convert that wealth into industrial capacity. It was a bet that theoretical education alone wasn’t producing the workforce Nigeria needed.

FUTA started modestly, running its first classes out of a rented two-story building on Oyemekun Road before relocating to its permanent Obanla campus. What it lacked in early infrastructure, it made up for in singularity of purpose – a focus that has defined it since. Unlike conventional universities, FUTA offers no stand-alone arts or humanities degrees; even its social science and humanities research exists in service of technological ends. Every undergraduate leaves with a Bachelor of Technology, not a Bachelor of Science, a distinction the university treats as substantive rather than cosmetic: graduates are meant to understand not just the science but how to build with it.

The academic structure reflects this logic. FUTA organizes itself into “Schools” rather than the “Faculties” most Nigerian universities use, spanning engineering, earth and mineral sciences, agriculture, environmental technology, and – more recently – health sciences. Its computer science, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and food science programs have become reliable pipelines into both Nigerian industry and the global tech sector, with alumni known locally as “FUTARIANS” now working across fintech, oil and gas, and international research institutions.

Ranked repeatedly among Nigeria’s top universities of technology, FUTA has largely delivered on its founding premise: that a country’s industrial future depends less on the volume of graduates it produces than on whether those graduates know how to apply what they’ve learned.

To achieve excellence in science and technology education for national development.
